Florus, Lucius Annaeus. Epitome of Roman History; Contents of Livy's History of Rome, [1400-1499?], Edward Burgess manuscript collection 001, Special Collections and University Archives, University of Oregon Libraries, Eugene, Oregon. Burgess 001.

Red and blue, or in the language of heraldry gueules and azure, preponderate in the image of a shield. This is not by coincidence, of course, as gueules was the leading color in coats of arms at the time. This is because of its implications of nobility, beauty, and valor that aristocrats coveted. The deep red of this coat of artms contrasts with the other illustrations in this manuscript, dominated by blues and greens, with pink borders connecting them.
